One-of-One, Live, Free: The Custom Sports Card Activation Fotoboyz Built for WeTheHobby

Picture this: Tom Brady is signing autographs ten feet behind you. Mark Wahlberg had just come through the booth. The floor is a sea of 125,000 fans. And in the middle of all of it, people are lining up — not for a celebrity, not for an exclusive drop — but to watch their own sports card come to life, right in front of them, for free.

That's what happened at the WeTheHobby booth. And Fotoboyz was there to make it happen.

What drew fans to the WeTheHobby booth at Fanatics Fest NYC and The National?

WeTheHobby brought a full operation to both events — live podcast, real-time box breaks, and a complete sales activation. Inside their booth, Fotoboyz created one-of-one custom sports cards for attendees, free of charge, branded with WeTheHobby's identity and personalized on the spot. In environments where every booth charged for everything, a free premium experience created an immediate crowd.

This summer, Fotoboyz partnered with WeTheHobby — one of the fastest-growing brands in the sports collectibles world — to create a live fan activation at two of the most significant events in the hobby calendar.

  • First: Fanatics Fest NYC, which transformed the Jacob K. Javits Center into a massive arena for fandom, drawing more than 125,000 fans across three days of activations, athlete meet-and-greets, and exclusive collectibles experiences.

  • Then: The 45th National Sports Collectors Convention at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois — the premier event for sports card and memorabilia collectors in the country, with over 100,000 expected attendees, 600+ dealers, and a 500,000-square-foot floor.

WeTheHobby brought their complete operation to both events: a live podcast studio, real-time box breaks, and a full sales activation. Their booth wasn't just a booth — it was a destination. Founded in 2021 out of Rochester, New York, with over 140 team members, WeTheHobby has proven that you don't need to be in a major market to reshape an industry. These two events were their biggest stages yet.

Why did making the custom card activation free change everything?

At events where every experience has a price tag, free creates friction in the best possible way. Guests at Fanatics Fest NYC and The National kept asking our team: "How much does this cost?" The answer — nothing — stopped them in their tracks. That moment of genuine surprise became the most repeated guest interaction across both events.

At events this size, attention is the scarcest resource. Every exhibitor is fighting for it. Celebrity appearances, exclusive merchandise, live box breaks — the floor is engineered to overwhelm. The challenge for WeTheHobby wasn't visibility — their brand already drew a crowd. The challenge was giving that crowd a reason to stop, stay, and leave with something unique and personal.

And there was one more constraint: in an environment where every experience comes with a price tag, anything free feels almost suspicious. We used that to our advantage.

What does a live custom sports card activation look like for attendees?

Fotoboyz set up a card creation station inside the WeTheHobby booth. Each attendee received a one-of-one sports card — personalized with WeTheHobby branding and created live on site. Cards covered baseball and other sports, were finished while guests watched, and were completely free.

Lines formed instantly. People kept asking our team: “How much does this cost?” The answer — nothing — stopped them in their tracks. That moment of genuine surprise became one of the most repeated interactions across both events. In a sea of transactions, a free premium experience was refreshing.

Every card was a one-of-a-kind keepsake. No one else in the world has one like it.

When Tom Brady and Mark Wahlberg showed up next door

Mark Wahlberg came through the WeTheHobby booth, one among the many celebrities that came to visit the booth— and the energy was immediately electric. The crowd surged. Lines at our card station grew even longer as fans who had just caught a glimpse of one of Hollywood's biggest stars turned around wanting a card to commemorate the moment.

Then things got even more surreal.

At the very same time, the booth directly behind us hosted Tom Brady —widely regarded as the greatest quarterback to ever play the game. What happened next was something you can't script: fans didn't know where to go. Do you go left for Wahlberg? Do you turn around for Brady? It was already a pandemonium, and the energy just kept building up  — a collision of fan bases and cultural moments, all happening within feet of our card creation station. We were mobbed. And we loved every second of it.

The moments that mattered most

Beyond the celebrity chaos, it was the quieter moments that moved us most.

Fathers and sons standing side by side, watching their cards come to life. Grandparents and grandchildren sharing something tangible and personal in the middle of a massive, fast-moving event. The hobby has always been about connection and memory — our activation put something physical in people's hands that captured exactly that spirit.

What should event organizers know before booking a live sports card activation?

Three factors drive the performance of a live custom card activation: personalization (the attendee's name or team on the card), brand integration (the client's logo alongside the personal element), and the free model when budget allows. Events with all three consistently generate the longest lines and highest organic social sharing of any activation format on the floor.

Two events across two cities taught us a few things worth carrying forward:

  1. Free beats premium in a paid environment. When everything around you has a price, a genuinely free experience creates a moment of surprise that no amount of spend can replicate. The “How much does this cost?” reaction was our most valuable conversion tool.

  2. Personalization turns attendees into advocates. A card with your name and picture and your favorite team, made in front of you, becomes a story you tell. That's the difference between giving the attendees a branded merch and a memory.

  3. Your activation is your brand's story — make it worth telling. When Mark Wahlberg and Tom Brady were in the room, people still came to our station. That's not luck — that's what happens when an activation offers something no celebrity appearance can: something made just for you.
